Exploring Surgery Options for Ankle Arthritis

Ankle arthritis, characterized by the progressive degeneration of the ankle joint, can cause significant pain and hinder one's ability to move comfortably. When conservative treatments such as medication and bracing prove insufficient, surgery for ankle arthritis may become a viable option. There are several surgical procedures available to address ankle arthritis, each tailored to the individual's specific condition and needs. One common procedure is ankle arthroscopy, a minimally invasive technique that allows the surgeon to examine and treat the joint with small incisions. Ankle fusion, or arthrodesis, involves the removal of damaged joint surfaces and the fusion of the tibia and talus bones to create a stable but immobile joint, effectively eliminating pain. Ankle replacement surgery, or arthroplasty, is another option, where the damaged joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant, preserving joint motion and relieving pain. The choice of surgery depends on factors like the extent of joint damage, the patient's age, and overall health. While each surgery comes with its own set of considerations and potential risks, these options offer hope for improved ankle function and long-term pain relief for individuals battling ankle arthritis. If you have ankle arthritis and are contemplating surgery as a treatment option, it is strongly suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine the best type of surgery for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists of Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

Risk Factors and Symptoms of Ankle Gout

Gout is a painful form of inflammatory arthritis that can affect various joints in the body, usually the big toe. When it strikes the ankle, it's referred to as ankle gout. This condition can be identified by sudden and intense pain, swelling, and redness in the affected joint. The root cause of gout in the ankle is a buildup of uric acid. This waste product is produced during the breakdown of purines, which are found in certain foods, like red meat and seafood. Normally, your body transports uric acid to the kidneys for elimination in urine. But if not properly flushed out, excessive uric acid remains in the bloodstream, termed hyperuricemia. Eventually, uric acid crystals can accumulate in certain joints, including the ankle joint, and cause the classic symptoms of pain, swelling, and redness. Gout flares usually peak within 12 to 24 hours of onset and gradually improve over one to two weeks, with or without treatment. Some individuals may experience only one gout flare in their lifetime, while others suffer from recurring flares. In cases of recurring gout flares, symptoms can become more severe and prolonged, potentially leading to joint damage. If you suspect you have ankle gout, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and more advanced treatment options.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Causes and Symptoms of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete's foot, scientifically known as tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that can affect anyone. It is notorious for causing discomfort, itching, and unsightly skin changes. Athlete’s foot tends to be more prevalent among older adults, especially males. The primary cause is dermatophytes, a type of fungus that thrive in warm and humid environments. You can contract athlete's foot by walking barefoot on wet and contaminated floors, especially in public areas like locker rooms, showers, and pools. It also can be transmitted by sharing towels, clothing, or shoes with someone who has the infection. Prolonged use of sweaty, tight shoes that create a moist environment for fungi to flourish also increases the risk of infection. Symptoms of athlete's foot can include red and inflamed skin, persistent itchiness, flaky and scaly skin, thickened skin, and dry feet. In severe cases, tiny red blisters may develop between the toes or on the soles of the feet. The good news is that athlete's foot is generally easy to treat with prescribed antifungal creams or oral medications. If you suspect you have a particularly troublesome case of athlete's foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for help managing this fungal infection.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Westside Podiatry Center, LLP.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Achilles Tendon Ruptures

Achilles tendon ruptures are serious injuries often resulting from participating in intense physical activities such as running or sports involving quick turns and stops. If you experience a sharp pain accompanied by a popping sound in the back of your leg, it may indicate a tear in your Achilles tendon. Immediate diagnosis by a podiatrist, done typically through a physical examination and possibly an MRI, is crucial to determine the severity of the tear. Partial tears may require immobilization using a boot or splint, allowing the tendon to naturally heal over the course of approximately six weeks. Complete ruptures, however, often necessitate surgical intervention. Post-injury care includes elevation of the leg and pain medication. If you feel you may have ruptured your Achilles tendon, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

How Wearing Compression Socks Can Help You at Work

When it comes to working long hours, whether at a desk or on your feet, wearing compression socks has become increasingly recognized as a proactive health measure. Prolonged sitting can reduce blood flow to the legs, potentially leading to blood clots. Standing for extended periods places extra strain on the circulatory system and can cause fatigue and soreness. Jobs requiring extended standing, such as nurses, retail workers, flight attendants, and restaurant staff, benefit from the all-day support provided by compression socks. Similarly, office workers, administrative staff, and those in sedentary roles can protect their legs by wearing compression socks to alleviate fatigue and prevent swelling. The therapeutic pressure of compression socks can promote better circulation, reducing achiness and energizing the legs. If you work in an occupation that requires you to stand or sit for prolonged periods, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss relief methods and other ways to promote circulation in your feet and legs, such as wearing compression socks.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
