Movement and Stretching Techniques Can Help the Feet

Many people endure foot problems at some point in their lives. A foot injury may have caused the foot to become lethargic and performing specific exercises may help to get strength and movement back. This can promote accelerated tissue healing and can help to gradually return to normal activities. When starting a new exercise regime after a foot injury it is important to pay attention to different levels of pain that may exist. If the pain increases, it is advised to reduce the number of repetitions and to decrease the speed of the motion. Additionally, it can help to increase resting times between sets to give the affected foot ample time to recharge. Many patients prefer stretching exercises which can help improve range of motion. As soon as a gentle stretch is felt it is advised to hold it for approximately 20 seconds. Movement exercises can build strength and agility and they are performed in repetitions of eight, followed by a brief resting period, and then repeating. If you would like more information about the benefits exercise can have on the feet, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

It is best to speak with Our doctors to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.

Do Your Child's Feet Hurt?

Have your child's feet been examined lately? Healthy feet are happy feet. If your child is complaining of foot pain, it may be a sign of underlying problems.

Ankle Pain That Is Not From an Injury

If your ankle hurts and you cannot recall doing anything that might have caused it, it could be a result of a type of arthritis, an autoimmune condition, or an infection. Obviously, the best treatment will depend on the root cause of the pain. Osteoarthritis is when the cartilage cushion between two bones gradually wears away, causing the bones to rub against each other. This might be painful, particularly upon arising, and it can come on suddenly. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease when your body’s immune system begins attacking healthy tissue, including the lining of your ankle joints. This type of arthritis also causes pain, in addition to swelling and stiffness that begin in the toes and move toward the ankles. Fallen arches are when the tendons supporting the arches of the feet get damaged, the arches lose support and fall. An infection starting in a different part of your body may settle in the ankle joint. Any one of these ailments can cause ankle pain. If you feel such pain and believe you have not sustained an ankle injury, it is important to consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment for the underlying cause.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Westside Podiatry Center, LLP. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Heel Pain and Children

Children and young teenagers who participate in running and jumping activities can be prone to developing Sever’s disease. This foot condition impacts the heel and typically affects children between the ages of 8 and 13. The Achilles tendon connects the heel to the calf muscles, and Sever’s disease may occur when the growth plate in the heel grows faster than the Achilles tendon. It is considered to be an overuse injury and can affect children who run and jump on hard surfaces. Effective prevention techniques include wearing quality shoes that fit correctly and have shock-absorbent soles, maintaining a healthy weight, and performing specific stretches for the heel. One such stretch, the heel drop, is accomplished by standing on a step and lowering one heel at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. If your child has heel pain, it is strongly suggested that he or she is under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively manage this condition.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Causes of Metatarsal Pain

The long bones of the foot that connect the heel and the toes are called metatarsals. When the rounded head of a metatarsal bone is under pressure, it can become inflamed and painful with every step you take. The two main causes of this type of pain, also termed metatarsalgia, are the foot hitting a hard surface when you walk or run and faulty biomechanics of the foot itself. In many cases, the activity you are undergoing, such as running or walking long distances, or the shoes your wear may be the culprit. Pounding on pavement over long periods can bruise the metatarsals. Wearing high heels with pointy toes puts extreme pressure on these bones. Other causes include foot deformities like bunions and hammertoes that can affect your gait, being overweight, stress fractures that change the distribution of weight, and high arches. If metatarsal pain has begun to interfere with your daily life, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis and options for treatment.
